New Era One Room School
Winnie Celebrates 90!
Odds and Ends, This and That, Here and There, Etc. Etc.
Known to some as the "lady of many hats", others know Winnie as "the lady of quick wit", ever ready to create or recite a poem appropriate to any occasion; all who know
her, agree that she is "one-of-a kind". A school teacher for most of her life, Winnie has spent the past several years trying to stabilize and preserve Elizabeth's 200 year-old hotel. Though Winnie recently transferred ownership to one of her daughters, her continued life-mission is to tell the
old-old story of Manlove Beauchamp and the Kanawha
Hotel at Elizabeth.
WCHPS to Tour Beauchamp Museum
and Little Kanawha Hotel!!!!
Sunday afternoon, July 27th, from 2 til 4, members of our group and guests can visit these two Elizabeth landmarks. The Wirt County Historical Society will serve refreshments in the kitchen of the hotel. WCHPS member and descendant of the Beauchamp family, Bob Newman, will be available
for questions at the museum, and hotel authority Winnie Murray or her daughter, will share information about the hotel. This is a great opportunity to tour two major items of Wirt County history. Mark your calendar and make the 20 minute drive from Mineral Wells! TRY TO BE THERE!!!
New Era One Room School New Era One Room School has a photo display in the conference room at the Wood
C o u n t y School offices on 13th Street.
Enlarged black and white photos of ten early area schools are showcased. The schools pictured are: Nicolette and Cedar Grove, both in Clay District; College Hill in Harris
District; Chesterville in Slate District; Dewey School in Walker District; Oak Grove in Steele District; Green Valley in Tygart District; Greenmont School in Vienna and Graytown School in Lubeck District. There is also the photo of a "mystery school" located in the Lubeck District and it is hoped someone can identify it. The photos on the display were enhanced, enlarged and prepared for display by Photographic Journalists Dewayne and Ginnie Lowther, of Williamstown. There are 22 albums of schools and related articles in the museum. Schools as listed on a 1932 map are indexed. There are some schools that have only a name, no photos have been found, but fortunately, others have been researched by members of the various communities. We encourage everyone to preserve their school and community history through photos and interviews. Any research results would be welcomed as part of the New Era One Room School (Living History Project). New Era is a one-room school located on the Mineral Wells School campus. It is open lpm-3pm on Tuesdays, June thru August and by appointment year round.
