Wood County Historical and Preservation Society
The above named were 2008 recipients of
James P. Vaughan Awards for Historic
Preservation.
Local author Dave Morehead received an
award for Arts and Letters. He has written
five books, most noted being A Place grown
Quiet and Death Is No Stranger.
In the category of Building Preservation,
Trinity Episcopal Church was recognized
for the nearly three-quarters of a million
dollars spent a few years ago, stabilizing
and renewing the beautiful stone work that adorns the exterior of the circa 1870's church, situated at
Juliana and Fifth streets in Parkersburg. Receiving the award for the congregation was Father Larry Jackson.
The award for General Preservation of History was presented to our own Patty Cooper. For several years
Patty has portrayed various historic characters, such as Civil War spy Belle Boyd and Eleanore Roosevelt.
Patty is also heavily involved with the New Era School at Mineral Wells.
Speaker for the ninth annual event was Fred Armstrong, long-time director and archivist of the West Virginia
Division of Archives and History.
Mr. Armstrong recapped the events that led to many valuable records being salvaged from the Parkersburg
City Building, just prior to it's being razed in 1980. He also stressed the importance of preservationists, especially
on a local level, being vigilant to monitor the care and preservation of local records.
Sixty-two persons enjoyed the delicious meal and comfort afforded by our hosts at First Baptist Church.
