UPCOMING– LITTLE KANAWHA CRUISE!
Mark you calendars for Sunday afternoon, August 19, the day that the Homecoming finishes up. Leaving from the “Port of Point Park” at 2:00, aboard the Centennial, members of the historical society and hopefully plenty of guests will begin a four-hour cruise up the historic Little Kanawha. Our time should allow us to get near the remains of the Leachtown locks and dam, also known as Lock #2.
Our cruise will also be a history lesson. Members will give a narrative of the many historic sites that we pass. We will return to “the Point” at 6:00.
The Little Kanawha was once a main artery into the center of West Virginia. Packet boats carrying both freight and passengers used to have scheduled runs and stopped at the many small communities that once lined the shores of this main waterway. Boat service routinely extended to Creston, and with special low draught boats, they sometimes made it to Grantsville and beyond. See where the various ferries used to cross; pass by sites of lumber mills and old bridges and hear exciting stories of the river.
The boat will hold 125 people. It is hoped that our members and others of the community will
take advantage of what should be a very interesting and historic cruise and support what will be our major fund-raiser of 2007. Money raised from this cruise will be added to our “cemetery fund” that is held in trust at the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation.
Please use the form below to reserve a spot on the cruise. It should be educational and fun! Ask a friend to join you!!!!
