SPRING IS IN THE AIR!
Have you feel it yet? Perhaps it comes with
age, or perhaps it is anticipation brought on by
- Whatever the reason, by now most of us have
felt a touch of "Spring in the Air".
What are your most reliable precursors of
Spring? This question was posed to some of our
members; their answers were varied:
Mary Lemasters listens for the sounds of birds
and watches for the budding of plants; Barbara
Murnahan also watches the birds, especially the
flocks of robins that visit her backyard; Lucy
Parker, who is probably our "most senior" member
doesn't necessarily watch or listen, she feels
the sun begin to offer warmth. Ron Eddy listen
for the "peepers" (little frogs) to begin their spring
chorus's. Ron says that they have to freeze and
thaw three times before Spring is here to stay.
Ron's wife Loretta used to listen for the whippoorwills
to announce Spring, but unfortunately,
they have seemingly disappeared, now she
watches for the Easter Flowers to pop up. Bill
Hines also watches plants, especially the hyacinths
bushes and forsythia plants.
What did most of the members above like about
Spring? WARM WEATHER!
Here is a word puzzle that is a good test of
your vocabulary. Each one of these "brain brighteners"
consists of a group of words. One of the
words is written in capital letters, which is followed
by words expressing relative terms. The solution
of each "brain brightener" consists in crossing
out all the words in each set with the exception
of the one expressing a meaning directly opposite
that of the capitalized word. You should be able to
solve correctly each "brain brightener" in ten seconds.

How About a Puzzle, ala 1929?
Jonas Jeeps, a Rural Free Delivery mail carrier, has
twelve farms to visit, which are miles apart and some
of the roads are over hiil and dale. The above diagram
shows the roads and farms which are lettered according
to the initial of each owner's last name.
By dint of long experience the carrier discovered the
best, if not the shortest way, to visit each farm, by using
the roads indicated. He often remarks that there is only
"One right way" to do a thing, which will also give you
a clue to the route he follows.
Starting at the place marker "J" (as Mr. Jeeps lives
there), go to each house only once and along roads that
do not touch each other and spell out the suggested
route.
Be the first to send the correct "route" to:
WCHPS, P.O. Box 565, Parkersburg, WV 26102,
and you will win a membership for a friend. The
winning entry will be determined by the earliest
postmark.
The winner and answer will be announced in the
next newsletter. GOOD LUCK!
